Electrolube's R&D Manager to Give Presentation on Non-Toxic Rins at SMTAI

Electrolube, part of the HK Wentworth Group, has conducted intensive research into non-toxic polymers in encapsulation resins with impressive findings. Dr Xiaoping Lei, the R&D Manager of HK Wentworth Group, will give a unique insight into the company's research and newest developments by giving a presentation on "Non-Isocyanate, Non-Mercury Polyurethane Encapsulation Resins" at this year's SMTA International technical conference.

Polyurethane is a unique material that offers the elasticity of rubber combined with the toughness and durability of metal. The polymer has therefore been widely used in the electronics industry in encapsulation resins and conformal coatings to protect printed circuit boards and other components. However, there are two major issues with the production of polyurethane polymers. One is obviously the toxicity of the isocyanate and the other is the fact that the more effective catalyst used for the polymerisation contains mercury. These issues become even more pronounced with their use in the electronics industry because the polymerization process normally takes place in situ where the operators have to be exposed to such materials.

To overcome these drawbacks, the R&D department at HK Wentworth have carried out intensive research and consequently developed a novel system to produce polyurethane polymers without using isocyanate or mercury catalysts. Dr Xiaoping Lei’s presentation will compare the properties of the polyurethane material cured using the novel non-toxic system and that made from the conventional cure chemistry.

The SMTA International conference and exhibition will take place between the 14-18 October at the Walt Disney World Dolphin Hotel in Orlando, where Electrolube will also be launching their newest PE7600 polyester resin, silicone resins and eco-friendly aerosol products on booth 637.
