The IPC APEX EXPO Conference took place last week at the San Diego Convention Center with cautious industry optimism from most exhibitors and attendees for 2013. The conference and show was earlier this year and provided many companies the chance for sales meeting with regional managers and rep networks. The second half of 2012 was slower than expected with the US election and fiscal cliff affecting global markets and most were glad to see the beginning of a new year.

Dr. Michio Kaku, renowned physicist was the keynote speaker on Tuesday and is internationally recognized for using science to predict trends affecting life and business. The keynote address was packed with attendees and exhibitors with standing room only as the discussion began. His presentation provided excellent insight and described the potential future of electronics, medicine and life. He was busy signing autographs of his book as the show opened.

The trade show floor opened after a ribbon cutting ceremony with many industry participants including IPC President John Mitchell. Attendees were provided a wide range of technical sessions across the spectrum of technologies from PCB fabrication, IPC standards, advanced board assembly and test. The show floor included over 350 exhibitors and a clinic organized by IPC and National Physical Laboratory on cleaning and contamination which provided attendees an opportunity to discuss and learn more about this important process. The IPC also hosted a "handsoldering" competition and championship.

Jeff Ferry, Publisher of Circuitnet and I met with 150 companies during the conference to learn about their latest technologies. Companies work hard each year to develop new technologies to differentiate themselves and provide solutions to complex customer issues. Most equipment manufacturers are guarded about 2013, and feel the global electronics industry may have limited growth this year. But there is optimism as PCB assembly may be returning to North America along with growth in Mexico and South America can offset concerns for the continuing European crisis. China also seems to be in recovery mode after a slowdown last year and this may turn into a growth opportunity again.
