VIEWPOINT 2017: Pamela J. Gordon, Senior Consultant, Antea®Group
Manufactured electronic products and their packaging keep circulating in the economy -- first in their original form/function from one customer to the next customer and onto the next. Along the way the product is upgraded, repurposed, and reused again. Finally at the end of the hardware's end of usefulness, it is recycled into materials that flow back into the supply chain for newly manufactured electronics. Since the November 2016 EICC Responsible Electronics Conference, at which I presented the results of an EICC-sponsored study on substantively increasing electronics reuse and recycling, numerous companies are asking for our help in beginning or accelerate their transition from the Linear Electronics to Circular Electronics. Together we take these steps: 1) Prove the business case at the executive level. 2) Determine how the company can maximally, profitably, and competitively play in Circular Electronics by providing customers with better, more convenient, and longer-term value. 3) Create a multifunctional roadmap, including new financial models and further connections between suppliers up and down the supply chain. 4) Train product-launch teams in Design for Circularity emphasizing long-life, low-risk materials, and easy refurbishment/upgrade to generate revenue far longer and wider than in "make-consume-waste" Linear Model.
